Past Pupils Union (P.P.U.)
The Past Pupils Union was established in 1954. All past pupils of the school are eligible to join. Its stated role is to "support the spiritual, social intellectual and material welfare of its members".
Each year the union elect a "Row person of the year". The chosen person is presented with the PV Doyle Trophy at the annual dinner in the Westbury Hotel. It is given to a person who has distinguished himself/herself in their chosen profession since leaving school. Some of the former recipients include Shay Healy (Actor and broadcaster), Cyril Cusack (Actor), Jackie Carey (Man.Utd and Ireland footballer), Ken Doherty (Snooker world champion), Ray Treacy (Footballer), Francis Brennan (Hotelier and Broadcaster), and Brian Dowling (Political Broadcaster). The former presidents of the union since 1954 read like a who's who of Irish life. JF Dempsey, D. Quigley, T. Coburn, T. Kealy, P. Costello, D. Blayren, J. Conway, B O'Higgins, D. Kane, J. Cullen, and B. Duncan.
The union are very supportive of the school. They help with career guidance, and use their extensive network to prepare pupils for the world outside school. They sponsor our annual student of the Year awards. They sponsor a Gaeltacht scholarship each year. They have also assisted with funding for special projects such as the Pearse Museum. This year 2014/15 they have organised our 150th celebrations which include a visit from An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD, a mass and a concert. They also published an excellent history of the school. We are very proud of our P.P.U. and very appreciative of their ongoing support.
